Seodaemun Prison History Museum

A place redolent of Korea Independence Movement Day is Seodaemun Prison History Museum.

This museum is located at Seodaemun Independence Park. It was built during the Japanese colonial period to take Korean followers of the Independence Movement into custody. Many Korean independence fighters were tortured and executed in Seodaemun Prison.

After liberation from Japanese rule in 1945, Seodaemun Prison was used by Korean government until 1987. During that period, a lot of democratic agitators, civil society activists and scholars were imprisoned into this prison.

Seodaemun Prison reopened as a history museum in 1992 to honor all Koran patriots who had dead in this prison.

Seodaemun Prison History Museum is one of the most important symbols of Korea’s political resistance and liberation from Japanese rule.
