Do you like a full moon? In Korea, a full moon has a special significance. It is why Korean celebrates the first full moon of the lunar calendar, every 15th January, which is Jeongwol Daeboreum.
Jeongwol Daeboreum 2017 is 11th February.
On Jeongwol Daeboreum, traditions and customs are performed to wish for bountiful year and to bring good luck into their life because the full moon is believed as the symbol of breaking the darkness and treating the illness.
Food
1. Cracking Bureom
Bureom means a nut, such as peanuts, walnuts. On Jeongwol Daeboreum, Korean eats nuts because they believe that eating nuts on this day help to make one’s teeth strong and to avoid any bad luck, particularly illness in the coming year.
2. Eating Ogok-Bap
Ogok-Bap is cooked rice made with several grains. Eating Ogok-Bap with vegetable side dishes is believed to bring good luck too.
Game
Jwibulnori
Jwlbulnori is the typical game played on Jeongwol Daeboreum.
This game was performed originally in order to burn weeds on rice paddy to kill an insect and a rat. Nowadays, Jwibulnori is performed as the symbol of Jeongwol Daeboreum. Jwibulnori’s flames lighting up the night sky show a marvelous sight.
Watching a full moon
The best event of Jeongwol Daeboreum is
obviously to watch a full moon.
Namsan Seoul Tower is the best place to
observe a full moon in Seoul. Moreover, the harmony of a full moon and a night
view of Seoul is fantastic.
The first full moon festival 2017 will take
place in Namsangol Hanok Village at 15:00 – 19:00, 11th February 2017.
