Do you know that Korean celebrates New Year at different day?
Seollal, Korean New Year Holiday, is one of the most significant traditional Korean holidays, which celebrates the first day of the lunar calendar. It is the day ending the last year and welcoming a new year. 2017 Seollal is from 28 Jan to 30 Jan.
For this holiday, all family members gather up to the parent’s house. And they have a meal together and play games to pray good luck for a new year.
1. Tteokguk[Korean Rice Cake Soup]
It is the main dish of Seollal, which is a kind of soup made with sliced white sliced rice cakes, beef and dumpling.
The rice cake used for this soup is Garaetteok which is a white and long rice cake.
Korean eats this rice cake at Seollal because people believe Garaetteok would help us to live longer and healthier.
2. Sebae
during this holiday, family member do Sebae to pay respect to their elders (grandparents, parents).
Sabae is a traditional deep bow while wearing Hanbok which is Korea traditional dress. To wish luck for a new year, when people do Sebae, they are saying “saehae bok mani badeuseyo”
